Craft Cocktails at Home: Giveaway

This quote sits on my desk as a constant reminder to me. It's something that has been fundamental in shaping my life-hanging out with those that push me, inspire me, teach me. There is a particular group of food science and molecular gastronomy men in Boston (and now throughut the US as we've migrated) who constantly inspire me in the kitchen and bar with their creations. And one of them-Kevin Liu just published a pretty amazing handbook- Craft Cocktails at Home. He kindly offered to giveaway one of the the paperback version to one of my readers.

This book is a MUST if you are working to curate your own home bar, want to experiement with simple cocktails and progress to more complex varieties, or you just want to spice up your liquor knowledge. I had a chance to review it before it was published and the recipes and techniques are quite jaw-dropping!

Thrive Mondays: Stress Busters

 
Stress sucks.
Plain and simple.
 
 
Sometimes it feels like stress is firing at us from all directions-work deadlines, highly addictive junk food that depletes energy instead of fueling our bodies, air pollution, lack of sleep, family/friend drama and sedentary desk jobs all contribute to our stress levels. Food cravings, fatigue, weight gain, loss of sex drive, impaired digestion and lackluster skin and hair are all symptoms of too much stress. Let's not forget that you're much more productive when you're relaxed.

I mean really-who doesn't want less stress??

Your Stress Less To-Do List:
  • Cut out any foods that you may have a senstivity or allergy too
  • Boost up your fruits, veggies, whole grains and healthy fats-these nutrient-dense superfoods will help to fit the negative effects of stress on your body
  • Don't stress about calories, or obsess about your food. Food should energize and heal you-not bring you more stress!
  • Make a list of things that destress you-long baths, massages, going for walks, working out, cooking, playing with an animal...go crazy with ideas! Aim to incorporate 1 stress-relieveing activity in your day.
  • Is the constant checking of your email, text messages and voicemails causing you stress? Let your smartphone cut down some of your stress. I love these two apps for stress reduction: GPS for the Soul App and Daily affirmation
  • Make a space a stress free zone. Maybe it's your car. Maybe it's a chair in your living room. Maybe it's your bedroom. Put things that relax you in this space and retreat there when neccesary.

Almond Giveaway

Yup, i'm nuts about nuts and so happy to annouce another nutty giveaway for you!

Thrive Monday: What about PROTEIN?


If you are now or have ever considered becoming more plant-based (Read vegetarian or vegan) than you've definitely gotten this question

But where do you get your protein? 

Think vegans are scrawny hippies?

Yes you can get enough protein on a vegan diet!

Rule of thumb- for average joe- 0.8g of protein per kg of body weight.

Take your weight in lbs, divide it by 2.2 and then multiply that by 0.8. Example 150#=68kg x 0.8= 54g protein per day. If you are strength training you can go up to 1.8g protein per kg of body weight. Endurance athletes should get 1.2-1.8g protein per kg of body weight.

But it isn't complete!

You're right-you need to mix and match vegetarian proteins to make sure you get enough of all of the amino acids. (Amino acids are like the building blocks of muscle). But variety is the spice of life and even if you aren't vegan you should be mixing up your protein sources (all chicken all day does a boring life make). Here are some examples of vegan protein: (for a complete list + menu ideas click here)

1 cup lentils=18g protein
1 cup black beans=15g protein
1 cup kidney beans=13 g protein
4 oz tofu=11g protein
1 cup quinoa=9g protein
2 TBS PB=8 g protein
1/4 c almonds=8g protein
1 cup cooked broccoli=4g protein
